Error Message “Boot Disk Failure” On Startup
Problem:
When attempting to boot, you receive the message:
BOOT DISK FAILURE
Cause:
This issue can be caused by a number of circumstances:
- The hard drive jumper(s) are configured as Master with Slave Present, but no slave is actually present on the IDE channel to which the drive is connected.
- The hard drive has failed.
- No active partitions are present.
Solution:
- If the hard drive jumper(s) are configured as Master with Slave Present, but no slave is present on the IDE channel to which the drive is connected, correct the jumper configuration.
- Run the drive manufacturer's utility on the drive, if possible.
- If necessary, set the appropriate partition active using one of the following methods:
- Use BootIt BM, referring to the article How to Manually Set a Partition Active, if necessary.
- Boot into DOS and use MBRWork.
- Boot into DOS and use the Microsoft FDisk utility.
