creating winre boot disk

win7 x64, ultimate.

i am just starting with image for windows. I think that if h.d. fails, or I can't boot, being able to access the image would be a good thing. so i tried to create a winre boot disk.

it complains that it can't find winre. I've looked at c:\recovery. if is empty. show hidden files and folders is checked.

I presumed that creating a boot disk would be simple. apparently not.

where do i go from here?

Have you ever used Rollback Rx on that computer? It renames winre.wim.

Can you post the exact output the TBWinRE script shows (you can copy it from the Command Prompt window)? There are several errors possible when looking for the file.

If C:\Recovery is empty (run "dir /a /s c:\recovery" from an Administrator Command Prompt to check), you can check in C:\Windows\System32\Recovery ("dir /a c:\windows\system32\recovery").

Otherwise, you can try searching for any WIM files. Run "dir /a /s c:\*.wim". If it's there and has a non-standard name it should show up. Remember to use an Administrator Command Prompt.

Brian: well, well. I am currently running rollback rx.

terrabyte: "dir /a /s c:\recovery" returns 0 files.
dir /a c:\windows\system32\recovery" shows one file : reagent.xml
*.wim returned c:\windows\system32\oobe\firstuxres.wim, and c:windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-setup-component_ ........\firstuxres.wim, cmd.exe says 4 files, but i don't see what the other two are. filemanager also returned c:\users\new\sources\boot.wim

Rollback renames winre.wim to winre.dat and uninstalling Rollback doesn't fix it.

Paul is better placed to help you with this.

I searched all of c: for winre.bak. nothing found.

Are you for sure running the "dir" commands from an Administrator Command Prompt?

What does running "reagentc /info" report? Does it show a path for "Recovery Environment"?

Otherwise, search for winre.dat (or winre.bak, or winre*). For example, from an Adiministrator Command Prompt, run: dir /a /s c:\winre.dat

If found, you can create a folder in your TBWinRE folder named "WinRE_Backup" and place winre.dat into it. Rename winre.dat to winre.wim. Then try running the TBWinRE script. Option 1 won't work if your WinRE setup is broken, but you should be able to create the boot media.

My mistake. It's .dat and not .bak.

I have searched the win7 install disc. no winre there either.
