How can I expand my EFI System Partition

Post by jvslincoln »

Hi, I am trying to build a multiple partition boot computer that will run multiple windows 10 partitions. It is for multiple vehicle manufacture diagnostic tools so the software does not conflict with different manufactures. I get to 3 separate partitions then when trying to installing the 4th windows software it comes up with i don't have enough space. I understand windows is installed in the EFI System partition which is only 100 MiB when you first in stall Bootit UEFI 2.04 . How can i increase the size of the EFI system partition please.

Hi,

I just had to do that (increase size of the EFI system partition ("ESP")....

I did it using Bootit UEFI 2.03.

In BUI, go to "Partition Work" and you can see the partitions. In mine, the EFI was the 1st partition, followed by the Microsoft Reserved, and then the Windows 11 partition.

All the partitions were right after each other and no space between.

So I to started with the Windows partition, I used BIU partition work to "Slide" the Windows partion "down" 1024MB.

Then the same thing for the Microsoft Reserved.

After that, there was empty space after the ESP, and I used BIU to "resize" the ESP partition to 1024MB.

If you look at the thread I had yesterday/last night with Brian, there are screen shots there. As I mentioned, I did run into some problems that Brian helped me clean up, but I don't know of another way other than sliding and resizing, so that is a caveat... maybe someone else knows of a safer way.

Hi Jim
Firstly thanks for your help, so basically I need to have free space after my EFI partition using the slide bar, how is this done as it comes up with free space before and after when you select slide ?? Then once I have free space after EFI how do I incorporate it to the EFI partition.

Think of the things you see in Partition Work as a picture of how the space in the "drive" that you have selected (e.g. HD0, etc.).

The space is "linear", i.e., the occupied parts are literally the way that they look in Partition Manager.

So if you have a whole bunch of partitions, and they are bumped right up against each other, then you can shrink the partitions, but you cannot make make any partition bigger, because it bumping up right against the partition that is "before" it and also bumping up against the partition that is "after" it.

So say you want to make the very 1st partition (the one at the "top"), bigger. You can't.... not immediately anyway.

You can't cuz like I said all partitions are bumping against each other.

So you have make some space AFTER the 1st partition, but how?

Well, you have to make one of the partitions smaller, AND then you have to slide all of the partitions that are "above" it down.

etc.

So it is kind kind like the game where you used to slide boxes around :)...

Jim

EDIT: Answering your last question: Once you make space after the EFI, you use "resize" to expand the EFI partition.
