Any ideas about how to select boot item (at boot) without being able to see the monitor?

Post by ohaya1001 »

Hi,

I normally use my laptops with an external monitor and an external keyboard. I got a new laptop this past Christmas, a Lenovo Legion 5i Pro. Since I started working with it, I've found some annoying shortcomings because of the way that I use the laptops:

- The laptop does not support wake-on-lan (WOL).
- It appears that the laptop does not send output to HDMI until it starts booting Windows. That means I can't see, or do, anything with BIOS and cannot see the BIU at all if I am using a monitor.

The reason for this post is I wanted to see if there is any way to select which OS to boot into. I know I can do it blindly, but I am wondering if may some way to leverage BIU, somehow, like maybe if there was a way if I pressed "3" during boot that would cause BIU to boot to the 3rd boot item, or something like that?

Or maybe if there be a way to configure BIU so that every time the machine is booting, BIU starts with the 1st boot item. That way, I would at least know how many down arrows to press.

Any other ideas??

Thanks,
Jim

You can set a shortcut key to use for a boot item. Then you just press that key to boot it from the menu. For example: "&Windows 10" to use 'W' for shortcut key. Or "Windows &10" to use '1' as the shortcut key. Or "&1 Windows 11 Main" and "&2 Windows 11 Testing" or whatever you want. The shortcut character will be underlined in the menu.

From Windows, you could use BootNow to boot items directly.

Hi,

WOW! That sounds perfect!!

So if I have a timeout set, I can either press one of the keys that I shorcutted, or it will just boot to item that is selected already?

Is that something you all did because some people had the same problem that I am having with the Lenovo laptop (just curious)?

Thanks!

Jim

EDIT: I didn't realize what you meant by "Bootnow" but I just saw it on your website. That will be helpful also!!

The timeout stops if there is user input. The input is then processed normally.

The shortcut has probably solved your problem, but note that you can set one of the bot items as the default also.
