Machine upgrade project

The OP stated that the end result is...

The system requirements are UEFI, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0.

Even though there are "hacks" to run Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, it's unknown if Microsoft will shut that down.

My EXISTING motherboard is Gigabyte F2A88X-UP4 FM2+.

If I check msinfo, it says BIOS mode is "Heredado" because I have Windows running in Spanish, this translates literally to inherited, so it probably means "Legacy".

If I look at the web page for the motherboard, it does have reference to UEFI. Looking at the manual, the BIOS has a CSM setting, as well as a Boot Mode Selection setting. I hope to shut down in about 30 minutes and take a look at what they say, and I will report back. I am guessing the Boot Mode is currently set to "Legacy Only".

Of course, getting a new motherboard/cpu/memory/etc., it should specifically support everything necessary for Windows 11. I have not begun to select the new hardware yet.

If built in the last 5 years, it "should", but I'd do a search for "supported motherboards for windows 11" to confirm...

For windows 11 it is the generation of the cpu that you need to be concerned about. I will suggest to avoid 13 or 14th gen at the moment because of what some on Ask Woody are calling "oxidation" but a mfr error that may or may not have a microcode fix.

Some say anything higher than 8th gen is okay for 11 but you will need more than that for 12, probably at least a 10th gen but don't know yet. I got a 12th gen on the cheap in a Microcenter bundle. Do shop around.

"My EXISTING motherboard is Gigabyte F2A88X-UP4 FM2+." - that's circa 2013 and an amd cpu socket. Were you planning on a new AMD or a New Intel - major decision! No rush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

intranetmouse,

It looks like you will need to do this on your current computer. Naturally, have a backup image.

I was looking at AMD, in part because that is what I have now and because price/performance seems better, and there have seemed to be more CPU flaws reported for Intel recently, but then the Sinclose flaw on AMDs came to light earlier this month, so I am a little less sure now what way to go.

I started making a spreadsheet of the motherboard features for different models, but the local shop has tons available, and I don't want to have to become an expert in what motherboard works with what CPU along with the other combinations, so I will probably try to get some recommendations from them and start there. I will definitely request the "UEFI, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0" that @OldNavyGuy mentioned.
