Windows 10 KB5050411 WinRE Update won’t Install
Problem:
The Windows 10 KB5050411 update won't install even if there is sufficient free space on the WinRE partition.
Cause:
If the installed WinRE has been updated or modified, Windows Update may prevent the update from being offered or successfully installed. This includes being updated to a TBWinRE build.
Solution:
There are multiple requirements that must be met for the KB5050411 update to be installed:
- The WinRE partition must have sufficient free space (250MB).
- The WinRE partition must not have already been updated (e.g. an update package was applied).
- The WinRE image version is less than 10.0.19041.5363.
- The system has a valid WinRE recovery partition and WinRE is enabled.
In addition to the above, the update may fail if the WinRE image is non-standard or altered from what is expected (such as being a TBWinRE build). In this case, it may be necessary to restore an unmodified version of the image to allow the update to complete.
Determining which Backup WIM to Restore
- Run TBWinPE/RE Builder.
- Click Next on the Welcome screen and then click the Settings... button (or select the File | Settings... menu item).
- Select the Program Paths tab.
- The "WinRE Source" section is shown in the lower section of the window. This section allows you to select either the Installed WinRE or a user selected WinRE WIM file to use as the source for TBWinRE builds. This source is also used when restoring the installed WinRE.
- Check the version/details of the installed WinRE:
- Select the Installed WinRE (recommended) option.
- Click the View details: Installed WinRE WIM link.
- The details will be displayed. A standard WinRE WIM will have a type of WinRE. A TBWinRE build will have a type of TBWinRE. If the installed WinRE is not a TBWinRE build there may be other issues causing the KB update to fail.
- Check the version/details of a user selected WinRE WIM file:
- Select the Use selected WinRE WIM file option.
- Click the down-arrow on the Browse... button and select the WinRE_Backup item (this will let you browse the folder with the WinRE image backups). By default, a backup is created each time a newer WinRE version is found. The backup filenames indicate the architecture and version of the WIM. The current backup, which is normally the same as the installed version, is named winre.wim. Sorting the files by Name or Date modified may also be helpful in determining which files are the most recent.
- Select a backup WIM file, starting with winre.wim, and click Open. The selected file path will be shown along with the version.
- Click the View details: Selected WinRE WIM link.
- The details for the selected WIM will be displayed. A standard WinRE WIM will have a type of WinRE. A TBWinRE build will have a type of TBWinRE. Basically, you are looking for the most recent WIM that is a standard WinRE type.
- As necessary, go back to Step 2 and select another backup WIM file to check.
- Check the version/details of the installed WinRE:
- Once the desired backup WIM is selected, enable the Allow user selected WIM to replace installed WinRE option and click OK to save the changes.
- Continue to the next section to restore the backup WIM.
Restoring the WinRE Backup WIM
The selected backup WinRE WIM file can be restored using the following steps:
- Run TBWinPE/RE Builder.
- Click Next on the Welcome screen.
- Select the TBWinRE project type. Click Next.
- If the License step is shown, click Next to continue.
- Build requirements will be checked.
- On the Build Type step, select the Restore the original Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) option. Click Next.
- On the Summary step, click Start to restore the WIM. After the restore completes you can exit TBWinPE/RE Builder.
- At this point, attempt to install the KB5050411 update. If successful, continue to the final steps.
- If you enabled the Allow user selected WIM to replace installed WinRE option, it's recommended to go into Settings and disable the option.
- If you restored a user selected WinRE WIM file, go into Settings and change the source back to the installed WinRE (it should detect the new/updated version of WinRE and create a new backup file the next time build requirements are checked).
