Problems using the “Next BIOS Device” Option

Most problems using the Next BIOS Device option occur because of a misconfiguration or incompatibility. You can take the following measures to help solve problems using it:

  • Upgrade to the latest version of BootIt NG.

  • Make sure that you are using it only when attempting to boot from the next bios device and not when booting a normal partition.

  • Make sure that the CD or DVD disc from which you are attempting to boot is actually bootable.

  • Make sure that you are using the Next BIOS Device option properly, by making sure that the CD or DVD drive comes after the hard drive in the boot order listed in the BIOS. (If you have the CD or DVD drive before the hard drive, the disc may boot, but you'll probably get errors when you attempt to boot the OS; one common one is "INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing".)

  • If the BIOS is set up correctly, and if the problem occurs once the OS starts (or setup), then you may try placing the CD or DVD drive after the floppy (but still after the hard drive).

  • If it hangs with a cursor in the upper left, then Next BIOS Device may simply not work with your system. There are some new mainboards where you must use the BIOS Sequence option to perform the Next BIOS device equivalent. In other words, keep the same setup and use the BIOS Sequence option instead.

  • If none of the above helps, it may simply by incompatible; you should switch the CD or DVD to boot before the hard drive and use the BIOS Sequence option or, after a simulated boot, press Ctrl-Alt-Del.
