Computer Doesn’t Wake to Run Scheduled Backup


Computer doesn't wake to run a scheduled backup task.


This problem is usually caused by the option to wake the computer to run the task not being enabled or by wake timers being disabled (Windows 7 or later).


Verify Task is set to Wake the Computer

When creating the task make sure to check the Wake the computer to run this task option. This option is available on the Settings tab when creating the task directly from Image for Windows. If using the Windows Task Scheduler, the setting can be found on the Settings tab (XP) or the Conditions tab (Vista or later).

Verify Wake Timers are Enabled (Windows 7 or later)


  1. Open the Power Options Control Panel tool:

    1. Press WinKey+R (hold down the Windows key and press R) to open the Run window.

    2. Type control powercfg.cpl into the box and click OK.

  2. Click the Change plan settings link for the selected plan.

  3. On the Change settings for the plan screen, click the Change advanced power settings link.

  4. Expand the Sleep item.

  5. Expand the Allow wake timers item.

  6. Change the setting to Enabled. On systems with a battery you will need to enable it for both On battery and Plugged in if you wish it to apply in both cases.

    Note: If you aren't able to change the setting, click the Change settings that are currently unavailable link in the top section of the window.


Technical Notes:

  • The Allow wake timers option may be disabled by default on laptop/notebook systems (it's normally enabled by default on desktop systems).

  • You can run powercfg -waketimers from an Administrator Command Prompt to see what is currently set to wake the computer. Scheduled tasks set to wake the computer will show in the list.
