IFL without boot disk (Windows) - Destroys UEFI boot entry?

Post by highend »

Hi,

I'm using this how to: https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/de/ho ... -bootfile/
and downloaded the latest ifl_setup.zip from it

Using: TBOSDTS 2.10 Pro
IFL no net 3.52 (created a registered .iso with it)

I've used this procedure for my PC since years...

Now I've assembled a new one (Intel B660 MSI Mainboard, i5-12400, etc.)

Installed Windows 10. Everything runs fine so far.

Prepared a no net IFL USB stick, booted from it, made a backup of the first SSD (where the OS resides) and stored the file on the second SSD.
Both SSDs are the same (WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe 500 GB)

Backuping and restoring are working fine when using this no net IFL USB stick.

I've now used the setupifl.bat method to be able to just invoke the whole procedure by a single command from inside the OS.

No error messages from it but when I invoke the run_ifl.bat
IFL will never be started after the reset but instead (there are no other boot devices attached) the system goes into the BIOS screen
The reason is: The UEFI entry that was present before (which started Windows 10), doesn't exist anymore!

F11 is the hotkey to get the boot menu after a reset and when I use it with the IFL USB stick attached the USB stick is the only entry in the UEFI menu.

Restoring the image via the IFL USB stick will bring everything back to normal (glad that I did make a manual backup via IFL before)...

Fast Startup is disabled on Windows 10...

Any ideas at all, why the bootfile.exe call to the .bin file in the run_ifl.bat seems to remove / destroy the UEFI boot entry?

highend,

I think bootfile only works with MBR systems. Do you have a UEFI system?

Yeah, it's a UEFI system.

Is there no way around that limitation?

If you don't want to boot an IFL UFD, you can have an IFL partition on a SSD. IFL can be booted from the BootIt UEFI Boot Menu. You can have a collection of scripts in the IFL Scripts folder.

Ok, thanks Brian!

That's not really the way I want to go... Atm I start my backup /restore via a keyboard shortcut in Windows (for absolute simplicity) and I love that (and doing this since I bought all my Terabyte software).

I'll see if I do a Windows reinstallation with MBR first to see if that one still works with my current way :)

You can boot IFL on an internal drive from Windows. Use a BootNow script.
You can also have IFL auto run a script. So, from Windows you can make IFL do auto backups/restores.

As it seems I currently don't have a license for BootIt UEFI (but only the old BootIt Bare Metal)...

I've downloaded the trial and created a IFU USB stick.
Even with direct access enabled the backup is slow...
17 GB in 87 seconds

IFL does the same in about 15 seconds...

So if I'd buy BootIt UEFI I would need to add another partition for IFL
Is there any guide on how to create a boot entry in BootIt UEFI that runs IFL from another partition with a specific script?
Because I'd need two boot entries (one for backup, one for restore)...

highend,

I'm not saying this is a bad idea, but another alternative is to use IFW for backup.

Bob,

not really the way I want to go either. I've used IFD in the past and with more modern PCs (SSDs especially) it just got too slow. I've switched to IFL because of this and I'm using that since years. Don't want to invest time for the myriad of options in IFW...

I've copied the IFL partition from the USB stick onto the primary SSD and I'm able to boot it from BootIt UEFI.

I could integrate the necessary script into it so that it does execute automatically once booted. But for a fully automatic way I'd currently need to do this procedure twice, one IFL partition for backup, one for restore (because each of them would have it's own script integrated).

Brian, is it possible to do it with just one IFL partition and a script on BootIt UEFI's side so that I don't need two IFL partitions?

highend,

You only need one IFL partition. You put multiple scripts in that partition.
I'm on a fishing holiday at present. Be home in a week and I'll have my notes. I'll post some instructions.
I only do restores but you can do backups too. I use IFW for backups.
