Error Message "A disk read error occurred ... Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" When Attempting to Boot Windows 2000/XP/2003 from HD1

Problem:

You receive the following error message when attempting to boot Windows 2000/XP/2003 from HD1:

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Cause:

Windows is looking for startup files (NTLDR, etc.) only on HD0 and not on HD1, where they reside (as determined by the BIOS).

Solution:

Enable the BootIt BM Swap option for the applicable boot item(s):

  1. On the BootIt BM desktop, click Boot Edit.  The Boot Menu window appears.

  2. In the Boot Menu window, select the boot item you wish to change and then click Edit (or simply double-click the desired boot item).  The Edit Menu Item window appears.

  3. Select the Swap option in the Edit Menu Item window.

  4. Click OK in the Edit Menu Item window and again in the Boot Menu window.
The Swap option can also be used with the Direct Boot Menu, either by selecting the desired boot item and using the F4 key to cycle through the various swap options, or by using the Item menu to select a Swap option directly.

Please note that since swapping is done at the BIOS level, Windows may undo the swap once it is up and running.
