Major Version 3?

Post by flintdk »

Hi folks,

Am just about to buy a copy of Image4DOS- had it strongly recommended to me. I understand "Minor (.x) updates are typically free, Major (X.) Updates have a cost."

Money is tight (isn't it always?!) so... are there any "Imminent" plans to move to the next Major version? i.e. would I be better off waiting for the next release or is version 3 probably some time away?!

Thanks!

I would consider getting Image for Windows that also gives
you Image for DOS. It is less than $10 more.

I love these programs.

These programs are the best and support is brilliant too. I cannot
speak for TBU's plans, but they keep with a major version for soooooo
long and release mmmaaannny updates that add features, user requests
as well as bug fixes; I actually feel guilty getting all of this and
paying for it so infrequently AND at a bargain price.

I have been a customer since Feb. 2007; and IIRC, apart from my
initial purchases, there has only been ONE major update.

Do yourself a favour, buy the whole Image bundle. I use all three.

So I don't sound too much of a fan boy, I have one criticism. It is
the documentation. It is clearly written by somebody who understands
the product and the subject intimately. The trouble is, that it has
not been written through the eyes of a user who doesn't. There is too
much of "selecting this box activates feature ", without
explaining what the feature does or why one would want to use it. As I
said, support is top hole so that is not such an issue. These fora are
very good but email is much faster, it is like instant messaging.

Do yourself a favour and break open the piggy bank now and join the
club.

I forgot that getting IFW also gives you Image for Linux
(IFL) if you want to play with that as well.

I bought v1.something in 2006, and at that time, they were offereng a free upgrade to v2 when it came out later that year. It ended up coming out in late 2007, but they still honored the free upgrade.

I have no idea if they're planning a v3 upgrade, but I would guess that if they do decide to release something, they'll make a similar offer... but probably not until they're sure its release is imminent!

Is there any "how to" that shows when default options should be changed and/or a list of symptoms that indicate a problem with having used the default options? Like: if you have a new out-of-the-box Intel - Win7 portable, use the defaults. Ditto Win8. That info would be a great comfort to have...

In short, a simple list that gives a hardware context to show when it's OK to use the default settings would be great for us new users. Then all the complex stuff like disk geometry could be referenced as needed - IF you had that hardware installed.

I add this because the documentation is, as you say, written for someone who knows what's necessary. For those of us who don't, just a list of things that might change the default choices would be a real confidence builder.

defaults are fine, entire drive backup/entire drive restore. Things change
when you start wanting to backup or restore individual partitions or restore
to different hard drives while the original drive is still attached (since
windows will alter things if it finds duplicate signatures on boot or attach
of device, which can make it not bootable).

Hi TeraByte,

Does this also go for 'partitions' in a VM (I use vmWare ESXi)?

I have a new VM environment and just bought 6 new licenses so I can run IFW on each virtualized server for automated imaging, and want to image each partition separately.

Will the defaults be fine for such a situation?

Is there any documentation specific to a virtualized environment that you can point me to?

Thanks
