When it's released Friday, does anyone know if the advertised version of
Win8 Pro Upgrade for a limited time for $69.00 that all the stores and
online sites have has to have a version of Visa or Win7 installed to do the
upgrade ?

What I wanted to know is if you want to do a clean install, do you have to
install Vista or Windows 7 again to upgrade to Windows 8 ?

I don't know if I should get that Pro Upgrade or just wait for a full retail
version. I am not sure and can not find out if there is a full version or
not.

I prefer doing clean installs all these years rather then doing upgrades. In
the past before Vista came out you could use an upgrade disc to do a clean
install and you just had to provide a disc of a previous version of windows
to verify that you were entitled to an upgrade.

It is possible while a bit time consuming.

Read the details on the $69 offer. It might only be for new
computers purchased after a specific date.

I have seen what you are saying about Win 7 upgrade. That is a bother and I
don't want that.

The $69.00 one is shown on newegg just calls it an upgrade. Don't say
anything about new computers purchased after a specific date. I know that
one you are talking about.
It just says it' for an upgrade from XP, Vista or Win7.

I guess I will just wait awhile and not jump into these pre order offers.

Installing twice was time consuming more than a bother for
me. I did a clean install using my 3rd upgrade Win 7 from
the 3-computer Family package I got over a year ago. I had
to install twice to do that.

Doing that did completely get rid of new computer junk I
didn't want.

If someone really thinks they won't want to go to Win 8, now
is a good time to get the Win 7 Family Pack that Amazon
still has. It is good for 3 computers using same install code.

This is how it will work officially from Microsoft - works with the
much cheaper d/l version. You use the upgrade assistant to check if
your computer qualifies as it will already have a windows OS running
on it. INSTEAD of upgrading the current OS, opt for the option to
save/make an ISO for install later. This 'later' can be to a virgin
partition on the same PC. AIUI, that copy of Win 8 could in some way
be tied to the checked PC as a serial number is not needed.

I found this by Googling the same topic last night.

The UK price of the upgrade (for download) is £26, currently $41.71.

I see Dr Teeth's message on the web interface.

However, there is a long standing bug in the Terabyte NNTP software
such that retrieving messages that have 'special' characters in them
anywhere, cause it to crash.

Dr Teeth used the pound symbol. I've seen this with accented
characters, the 'TM' symbol, and even the reverse single quote sign
(on the tilde key).

On my system (I use Forte Agent), having retrieved the header, Agent
keeps trying to retrieve the body without success until I abandon the
task.

As far as I can make out, this problem started happening after
Terabyte 'upgraded' their forum software some time ago.

That is what I see too.

So the GBP sign is illegal - what a bug and a half. It would be nice if a list could be published - this a real PITA.

That reply post didn't show for me either using Windows Live Mail for the
newsgroup. So seeing what others said about it not displaying I went to the
web newsgroup and saw it.

After reading it, I looked too and found this blog that explains also just

I am just wondering if using the upgrade assistant will tie a copy of
win 8 to a given PC like an OEM licence. I upgrade my PC every 2-3
years and would not be happy if I could not reinstall like a retail
copy (upgrade or not).
