My friend, who also uses Terabyte IFW for imaging, has a problem where
when he boots into IFL UI, the monitor brightness drops to almost
unreadable levels. The top half of screen is worse than bottom.

On my computer, there is no problem.

I let him use my IFL boot disc, since he had issues seeing USB connected
drive using IFD boot disc. So, no difference in that respect.

Was wondering if selecting something other than default screen
resolution during bootup, would fix the issue?
Other than that, I don't see any other fix.

At the risk of sounding flippant (and I am not), could he not just increase the brightness of his monitor on a temporary basis? All my monitors (6) are all set at 50% and are generally bright enough and have some brightness in reserve. Does the same thing happen with IfD - I know he cannot use it, but does it show the same dimmed display issue?

software within windows, and also the problem is not manifested when in
IFD ui.

It sounds like it's running in PseudoColor mode at the higher resolutions, which can happen with some graphics chips.

You can most likely work around this by selecting one of the lower resolution video modes avallable on the initial boot screen menu (there's a list of 4 choices there). I'd suggest starting with the lowest one (<4> 640x480), which you can select by typing 4, then pressing Enter.

From Windows, this one can be done fairly easily with a text editor, as long as you are using a USB flash drive as the boot media. If so, you can make the change with these steps:

1. Create the UFD boot media normally from MakeDisk
2. Turn off the read-only attribute of the file syslinux.cfg on the UFD (right click file - Properties)
3. Open syslinux.cfg in a text editor
4. Change the 5th line from "default 1" to "default 4". That will cause it to select 4 by default on boot
5. Save the change

That will do it as far as the actual setting goes. If you also want to make the text on the boot screen match the setting, you can edit the file menu.txt, and change the last line to read "default <4>" instead of "default <1>"

Note that these are Unix-style text files, so you may find them easier to edit if you use Wordpad (included with Windows), or a 3rd party text editor such as EditPad Lite.
