Brian,

I wasn't suggesting installing apps to another partition, I want my apps on C. I just want the user data to be backed up separately, not the programs. The apps don't use a lot of space and I see them as an integral part of the OS including their configuration (the registry within Windows on C).

What I want to back up frequently when they are updated are all my docs, pictures, videos, etc which are clearly user data files quite separate from the application, easily found and backed up. These can take up a lot of space, multiple times the size of the OS.

Of course there may be some apps which mix their data in with their programs and which don't have their own backup facility. Personally I haven't got any app like this where I can't find the data to back up, perhaps you have.

Your mention of junction points reminds me of some of the unofficial recipes to relocate the Windows User folders which I don't trust.

Clearly you're happy with your methods, but they don't suit me.

Russell,

All of the methods I use are Microsoft methods. Did you do this with your data files? In the Win7 start menu I have 13 shortcuts under my name. Let's take My Pictures...

Right click it
Properties
Location tab
my test computer shows C:\Users\Brian\Pictures
I change it to D:\Users\Brian\Pictures
Apply, Yes, Yes, OK

You can do the same for
Contacts
Desktop
Downloads
Favorites
Links
My Documents
My Music
My Videos
Saved Games
Searches

Those files will no longer be stored in the OS partition. Nothing non-Microsoft here.

Similarly, the junction method I use is from Microsoft.

You mentioned apps don't use a lot of space. DrT has 168 GB of games apps. No problem with that except I wouldn't have them in the C: drive. They could be moved into the D: drive with a junction point.

Maybe I'll try your method of relocation, not sure if I have tried it before. I'd still prefer to have the facility I requested and keep everything on one large C drive. Are you against asking TB to provide this as an alternative to your approach if it's possible?

I don't run games so I was most surprised when you said Dr T's 168GB was apps rather than data. In which case he probably does want an image of this rather than a file-by-file backup.

Russell,

We all have our preferences. I'm certainly not against folder exclusion. It would be interesting but I'd be unlikely to use it as I don't have a need but I understand it is your preference. Another thing I like about the Location method of moving User files is you can have your Desktop in the D: drive. That way you aren't imaging big files you temporarily keep on your Desktop.

I'm interested to hear from DrT about his preferences. My games are installed in a separate partition which I image occasionally. Nothing much changes in that partition.

Just out if interest, and I have not found an answer to this, when one
installs a program to a junction-pointed location, does the install
work okay or does the junction point only work with already installed
software?

This has been on my 'to-do' list for a while, but since upgrading all
my H/Ds to 2TB, by PC is usable during backing up - previously it was
not.

Hi Brian,

My preference is for folder exclusion. I would also hold a copy of the
games folder as a backup - as you say, not much changes there. I have
resisted the junction-point solution as I have not been able to find
out how it affects future installs. I am a good customer of
www.gog.com .

I don't know if I have seen this

here, but it may be useful for the purposes of this discussion.

DrT,

I looked at that link and it's too complicated for me. This is the simple method I use.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... s/bb896768

Don't be surprised if the web page doesn't make sense. It doesn't to me either. But this is how to do it. Let's say you have a huge Games partition....

C:\Program Files\Games

You would like it in F:\DrT
Move the Games folder to the F: drive so you have F:\DrT\Games
You have to Move, not Copy.
From an Admin Command Prompt run...

junction.exe "C:\Program Files\Games" "F:\DrT\Games" -s

Done. You will have to do this on your other games folders if they aren't in the Games folder but I'm sure you have the idea. C:\Program Files\Games will be present "again" but that is the junction and it is taking up no space. Check the used space for the C: drive. Don't check C:\Program Files\Games.

I've restored my OS and Games images on numerous occasions and everything works properly. When you update a game the update goes automatically to the new partition. After the junction has been created there is no more work to do.

I know this sounds frightening. Try it on a small unimportant game to build your confidence.

Try this simple test..

Create a folder in the C:\ drive...

C:\111

Move the folder to the F: drive so you have F:\111

junction.exe "C:\111" "F:\111" -s

Put a file in C:\111. Have a look in F:\111. You will see that file.

To delete the junction...

junction.exe -d "C:\111"

Now manually delete F:\111

(or you could move 111 back into the C:\ drive if you wanted to start again. eg if it was a game and you no longer required a junction. The game will work as it did before)

DrT,

Did I answer your question about installs? Anything you install or update in C:\Program Files\Games will automatically go to F:\DrT\Games.
