backup data encryption

:) Hello. I would like to get a better sense of how secure the backup data is when I make it with encryption. How good is this encryption, for example, in comparison with encryption implementations such as LUKS or Truecrypt? Is there any way to increase its strength? Can someone here point to a resource or two that will explain this to me? Thanks. :geek:
