Thanks for the clarification. One further question:-

On restore, will the 'omitted' page file and hibernation file be put
back in exactly the same locations as when backed up?

To take a particular case. Suppose the 'omitted' page file is severely
fragmented and then is backed up. On restore will all the fragments be
placed back where they were originally?

yes, but it depends on the /phc (PageHiberClear) option on restore.

This http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html
looks interesting.

I did some tests using the mklink util in Win 7 using some specially
created folders and all went well. The only thing is that one cannot
install to the link on C:. One would have to install to a different
folder, then copy the files to the linked-to folder. Could make future
installs interesting...

See the /exlist option in the manual.

Is there any good reason why this useful feature is not enabled in the
GUI in some form?

Yes, why does IFW not offer excluding Folders & Files in the UI?

It's not a file based backup, more knowledgeable users will know of /exlist for special purposes.

I know this is an old topic, but reading the comments it sounds like a few users are doing it wrong.

IFL is a disk imaging tool aimed mostly at backing up your operating system in case it gets hosed and your OS won't boot. For those trying to reduce their image size there are two strategies: (1) put as many apps as you can especially games, (and, yes, this applies to Microsoft Office and Adobe products as well) on a separate drive partition, say in subdirectories under, D:\APPS. In fact, I have a policy not to install any software that does not give me the option to install someplace other than "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)". This will dramatically reduce the size of your OS image backup and it will restore much faster. You you can separately image your apps partition and it will also be a smaller image and restore faster. My copy of MSO 2013 is 1.5GB in size on my D:\ drive and, yes, it works just fine when I restore just Windows to the default drive C:\. (2) The other option is to copy or move files from the root drive before you image it. I use scripts, for instance to delete, all the browser cache garbage in my user folder, unneeded Windows log files as well as deleting all temp and backup files to reduce the OS footprint before I make an image. Disabling Windows System protection which creates huge backups on your C:\drive, will also save a ton of space and is not needed since you are using IFW.
