IFW has been failing recently with an LBA error:

Now, I don't even know what an LBA is but I guess it is reporting an error
on C:. But what's odd is that when I run the back *manually* (rather than
via task-scheduler) I don't see any error [and indeed, I had win7 do a
diskcheck, reported no errors and I also used a different backup app, just
to check and it didn't report any errors, either.

This afternoon I ran it and got:

looks like you have a hard drive or cable or controller starting to go bad
(you can confirm it's not something like a virus in Windows preventing
access by backing up using IFL or IFD). You can run the drive
manufactures scan utility to check the drive (and potentially relocate bad
sectors unless the relocation table is full).

Hi Bernie, got any luck with this so far? I would like to know on how this issue was resolved for you.

I am getting the same error. Usually 2 to 10 minutes into the backup when IFW is reading the internal drive and writing to the external drive. Sometimes I get it, sometimes not. There are no disk errors logged in the Windows event logs other than the application event that IFW writes that duplicates what it writes in the IFW.LOG file. The SMART attributes of the drive indicate no errors in the error log. None of the SMART attributes bump up or change in any way. The drive has zero reallocated sectors, no pending reallocations, and zero read errors as wells zero uncorrected read errors. This is not happening as a result of disk errors or controller errors. I use Dropbox, so I am trying it with that turned off when I do the backup, but then it might just be one of the times it would have worked anyway,

Running Windows 7 64 bit. Sony Vaio laptop with 8GB RAM. Western Digital 500 GB Blue drive model WD5000BPKT-00PK4T0.
Just downloaded and installed IFW 2.72. This did not make any difference.

I have a 500 GB drive in an enclosure that works with eSATA or USB. It happens with either connection (I know the error is about the internal drive). The external drive will hold 5 copies of the backup. I have tried 12 times yesterday and today testing this and only have 4 valid backups so far. When I get the "error reading 127 sectors..." dialog, I always say No since the backup would not be any good.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, windows (or low level driver) is reporting an error reading from the
drive (or otherwise failing the request to do so) so the program stops and tells you.
If you're using VSS, VSS may have failed (too many changes). If you choose to
ignore io errors, it will report the total bad sectors found / reported at the end
of the backup (if you have keep failed backups enabled or don't do byte-for-byte
validation then the file wouldn't be deleted).

I should also point out that if you have certain encryption packages
installed or updated where that driver sits in the storage stack, they can
reject requests to read locations they save data they want to protect. As
could rootkits. If you want to look outside of windows (if
CurrentControlSet \Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
upperfilters/lowerfilters don't show anything which may be a problem), you'd
want to boot IFL or BIBM, and run the TBEXPLO.TBS script, mount that
partition in the script, go to \windows\system32\config\system and then to
the various filters you want to look at .. ControlSet whatever is current,
\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, the upper and lower
filters.
