Make pictures open in a new tab by default

Images hosted here in the forums, if I click on an image it gets downloaded, if I try to open it in a new tab it gets dowloaded anyway. If I click on an image hosted elsewhere it opens in there not here in the forum though.
I like and think it's better to open the image instead of downloading whether it's hosted here or elsewhere.
Could you change such behavior for images hosted here please?
