MB remaining larger than source drive

I've been using image for windows for many years and have noticed that MB remaining is larger than the entire source drive.
For example, I am trying to backup my 976GB C drive onto my Seagate exterior drive. 5 hours into the backup and MB remaining is 1.24GB, Processed is 543GB.
The reason I am posting here is because the backup (just for this laptop) has failed twice in a row.
