VSS and imaging data only partition> ??

Hello,
Another stupid question, I apologize. English is not my mother tongue, please correct what has to be corrected!
The situation :
one internal hard disk, two partitions C: = OS (: W 7) and D: = data,
one external hard disk, connected via USB, letter K:\
BIOS/MBR mode
The hardware is old, the OS and me too >that is why everything is done with IFW 2.99 (running from C:\, of course).
I want to make an image of D:\ on K:\
I agree that the idea behind disk images is to make an image of the partition containing the OS. But I don't think it's forbidden to make an image of a partition that contains only data (and no OS).
IFW starts with Phylock (or VSS).
Perfect.
But if, while imaging, I decide to modify some data on the D:\ partition (which is the one I'm imaging), isn't there a problem? Because I live with the idea that Phylock (or VSS) only lock the system partition (= C:).
Could you please clarify this?
Thanks. Paul Brussels Belgium
