Hi,

I am going to try again and have a couple of questions:

1) I used BIBM/IFD to validate one of the TBI image files that I want to try next and it validate ok. Would that validation have succeeded if the TBI file was not "compatible" with that BIBM and IFD?

2) I found that I can download the osdtool as part of my "collection" order, so I will download that and I guess use makedisk with that to make a DVD?

3) I've also been reading through the OSDtool manual and it's an awful lot, so is there like a shorter writeup about what I should try to do with it?

Sorry for the crazy weekend! I panicked because I needed to get a working system for work this week. Now that I have that (actually 2 systems), I still want to try to do a successful restore to the Dell Precision if that is possible.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

I forgot to mention a couple of other questions:

4) After I validated the TBI file, I then trying to do a restore (this was using BIBM/IFD) and I only checked the one partition, but even then I got the popup ERROR that it may overlap!! Is that telling me that that one TBI file is going to overlap another partition? I want to avoid wiping out the new Windows partition that I have on the Precision.

I downloaded the OSDTool and it's a ZIP file with a setup.exe. Do I run the setup on the machine where I am going to deploy the TBI file to? Before I had downloaded the OSDTool ZIP I was assuming that it would have a Makedisk to make like a bootable USB stick, but it looks like I run OSDTool from Windows itself on that Precision?

Thanks,
Jim

Sorry a couple of more questions:

5) When I try the restore, that "overlap" error popup only appears if I had selected "Automatic". If I select "Manual", then when I select only the partition, then the "overlap" error popup doesn't appear.

6) Also when doing the restore, should I select any of the "Options" checkboxes? I selected only "make active", but I noticed that the 2nd option checkbox is something about BOOT.INI. Should that "BOOT.INI" Options checkbox be checked?

stay focused on just one thing. First do an entire drive backup of what you have now. Next, do your single partition restore and try booting into safe mode (you can enable F8 option using osdtool if it''s not. osdtool is available via the IFL and IFW boot disk as well as standalone with TBOSDT). A lot of times a black screen can be a driver issue, it can also be something with the default profile.

I downloaded the OSDT ZIP and unzipped it but I tried the commands in the manual, from both the win and the dos dir, and I am getting "invalid command":

Hah! I made some progress, and found viewtopic.php?p=15978&hilit=invalid+command#p15978

so I had to click on the shortcut which brings up the dos-like window, then I typed:

run osdtools.tbs

and it looks like it takes me to osdtools.... shows physical drive and virtual drive....

but now, which do I choose to do what I am trying to do (remove drivers from the restored partition, I think?)?

Just enable F8 menu and boot to safe mode as the first step. Tap F8 quickly as soon as you attempt to boot the OS then a menu will come up, choose safe mode.

Hi,

Wow! I just got one restored image to boot!! Here's what I did:

1) Created a partition for the new windows
2) Restored the image to the partition using BIBM
- During the restore I checked "Manual" and then when selecting the partition I uncheced the Partial one and only the one I wanted and for options I selected Active and also the BOOT.INI one (the top 2 checkboxes)
3) After restore finished I booted into my original Windows where I had OSDTools installed then I ran TBwhatever as admin, and I did "run osdtools.tbs"
4) I selected the newly restore partition
5) using OSDtools I uninstalled all drivers and then installed the IDE/AHCI and the NVME Express Controller
6) Rebooted and made a new boot item. It was a little confusing because both Windows partitions are named the same.
7) Booted the new boot item (named "recovered") and.... VOILA!!!

I am going to do it over again, using a more recent (the one I used was 2019 Iwant to try the 2021 one) TBI file.
