If restore fails...

Post by borate »

Out of curiosity, if restoration fails what occurs...is the PC reverted to the prior working state?

No, you will end up with a partiality restored disk or partition, which will most likely be unusable. For this reason it is a good idea to select the 'Validate before restore' option in the 'Restore options' window when doing a restore. Although it doubles the time taken for the restore, it ensures that the relevant image files are readable immediately before the restore takes place.

As suspected, thanks. Normally, validation here is done when the image is written.

Well yes, you should validate when creating the backup, but bits can rot and disks can fail between creating an image and restoring it. The 'validation before restore' checks all the relevant image files involved in the restore (full plus differential or incremental chain) whereas the validation during backup only checks that particular image that was created at that time.
