Back ups have been made on a PC that boots Legacy mode.

If switched to UEFI and GPT partitioning will those back ups restore normally via the DOS recovery boot disk?

Yes, you could restore that Legacy image to the UEFI system with IFL, IFU or TBWinRE. Then create a Boot Item in BIU and the OS would boot.

IFL works well, but accessing it is slower than IFD - more load time, added menus and a need to type the product code, which isn't the case with the most recently created IFD disk.

Might IFU be a better choice once the system is converted to GPT/UEFI? Please explain how to create a Boot Item in BIU - a term not encountered here.

if you have to type the code, it was entered wrong when creating the boot media.

Restore your image to Free Space with IFU or IFL.
In the BIU Run menu click fixboot.tbs
On the Operations completed item make a note of Microsoft.xxx
On the BIU desktop click Boot Edit
Add
Make a Boot Item referencing Microsoft.xxx (see page 25 in the BIU manual)

Terabyte Support addressed the need to enter the product code.

Other than that, yes, there may be more interactions with IFL than IFD, but this will be far outweighed by the significant amount of less time to actually create the backup in IFL compared to IFD.

I have very limited experience with IFU, but I did try it recently and came to the conclusion that it's run time was similar to that of IFD.
