BIBM: NVMe 1TB only shows as 7.84 MiB

Post by fre_ »

Hi,

Recently, I bought a new NUC (NUC10i5FNH) which has the option of legacy BIOS.
I installed a NVMe 1TB (Samsung EVO 970) in this NUC.
On this NVMe, I installed BIBM 1.72.

After installing BIBM on this NVMe, BIBM indicates this drive only has 7.84 MiB in "work with partitions".
When changing Bus to Bios (direct), it stays the same.
I cannot create partitions on it.
To illustrate this, I attached a screenshot.

When I use instead a regular 2.5inch SSD (256GB) in the same NUC, there is no problem, BIBM shows the correct size and I can create partitions.

Is there some option I have to tick to make this NVMe work in BIBM?

ensure the bios is set to use lba mode for the drive (sometimes you have to use large mode but the correct one is lba). See https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=468

Thank you for your prompt reply, I did miss that article from the knowledge base, sorry.

edit:
unfortunately, the most recent version of the BIOS of this NUC does not provide any options concerning the logical block addressing.

fre_,

Probably not want you want but if the BIOS is set to UEFI, can BIU see the full size of your NVMe card?

Hi Brian, with BIU, this problem did not occur.
I considered using BIU as a permanent solution, until I saw the system won't boot if there's no monitor connected to the NUC. (headless)
When using BIBM, the system boots perfectly and can be used as a headless system.

Meanwhile, I did some further testing and I believe I found a solution using BIBM on this 1 TB NVMe.
When I do a manual installation of BIBM and make a dedicated partition of 1024 MB (instead of the 8MB), the problem isn't there anymore.
See attached screenshot.
(I didn't change anything in BIOS)

fre_,

Thanks for that. Interesting.
Which app did you use to create the 1024 MB partition?

I created this 1024 MB partition with BIBM and did a manual install via the setup button in 'work with partitions'.

Hi Brian,

I am currently running a server with BIU which runs headless. It does have a ASpeed ast2500 for iKVM remote management, but no monitor connected to it (might register as a monitor being connected though, not sure).

Are you sure BIU isn't booting for that reason? I did have some issues with BIU not booting anymore. See, including responces from Terabyte here: https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ucf/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3664

Just wanted to add this incase it helps.

Hi fre_,

Thanks for describing what you did (about creating the 1024MB and installing BIBM in that partition)!!

I was seeing the same problem and found your post and tried it, and it worked!!
