Upgrading to W10 from 7 and use IFW mainly for disaster recover for when my disk crashes and burns. The manual seems to be
silent on which is better VSS or Phylock and why choose one over the other.

What are the pros and cons and which should I be using?

I use Phylock. I guess just because I've used it for years, it seems to work well and be reliable, and I don't see any reason to fool around with something that has its own ideas regarding what to backup and what to exclude.

As long as PHYLock works for you, then it should be fine.
But I could never get it work, so I use VSS.
