The manual says the file is named like this -"By checking the Multi File checkbox Image for Windows will create a Multiple File Set backup. This type of backup is comprised of one image for every individual partition that Image for Windows backs up. Image for Windows names the first file created for the first image set <name>_0.TBI, where <name> is a character string you supply. Image for Windows adds _0 to identify the image file set. If Image for Windows creates additional files for the same image set, they will be named <name>_0.1, <name>_0.2, <name>_0.3, and so on. Image for Windows names the files of the second image set (i.e. the second partition included in the backup) <name>_1.TBI, <name>_1.1, <name>_1.2, <name>_1.3, and so on. Image for Windows will name subsequent image sets accordingly with _2, _3, and so on, appended to the file name."

The actual filename looks like this-Backup-w0-0x1-0x2-0x3-0x4-0x5-0x6-0x7-0x8-0x9-0xA-0xB-0xC-0xD-$~YYYY$-$~MM$-$~DD$-$~HHMM$ which doesn't correspond to the above.

Then the manual says this- "Image for Windows File Path Variables
You use a set of special variables in the image file name path. The variables are inserted in the file name path by using a special format of $~variablename$. If data for the variable is not available it will be blank/empty (for example, $~PDL$ is used, but there is no letter assigned)." Which doesn't correspond to the actual filename.

I just want to name each individual backup backup partition file by its drive letter, C, D etc. Could someone explain to me how to do this? Thanks

the is the base name and appends the _0 or _1, etc as it creates
them.

Do a single partition backup to give just a drive letter name.

You can of course do entire drive and they are all in one file.

So you're saying with a multi file backup each file can't have a unique name? It will just have the base name with 0,1,2 etc. appended? When doing a restore how do you know which file is which drive?

Not that I've ever tried this, but I suppose you could use the name C-D-E-F from which you could deduce that C-D-E-F_3 is partition F, but I have to wonder why use multi file in the first place.

You can use single file and then as part of the restore process choose which partition to restore out of that single file.

Maybe I'm being paranoid but it seems if something goes wrong with the single file the whole backup is lost. If something goes wrong with a file from multiple files Then just that partition is lost, not the whole backup.

I figured out what to do. After the backup I renamed the files in Windows explorer to the drive letter. Small extra step for peace of mind. Thanks for all your replies.

With multi partition backups your backup can be Single File Set or Multiple File Set. If you accept the TeraByte default naming (or your own naming) there is no confusion when selecting a backup image file to restore as the Partition Label relating to that file will be shown. There is no danger of inadvertently restoring an image to an incorrect partition.

I'd rather see you create a full to a single file because easier for
restoring, and copying the image off to an alternate location. Say NAS that
is mirrored.
