I have started to get these errors:-

Chkdsk does not report any errors.

What does error code 3 mean?

It's unable to read from the file. It could be a connection issue or possibly the drive failing. You could look in the Windows Event Log for any errors reported on it.

It turned out to be a flaky full backup. The drive etc is okay. Sorry
for not posting earlier.

you need to memtest86+ your system, then chkdsk /f the drive, and probably
run a surface scan using the drive manufacture utility or something like
spinrite.
