Create bootable Image 4 Dos FIXED disk

I've been struggling over the last few days at creating a Image For DOS bootable external drive. I've used the tool to successfully create bootable usb flash drives or iso's before, but cannot figure out how to move these files over to a FIXED disk and make it bootable. The "Create Boot Disk" tool provided does not let me choose a normal fixed disk (it only lets you choose removable flash drives).
I have a 1TB external usb drive that I have created a small partition on which I want to use for the Image 4 Dos boot environment. The rest of the space on the drive would be a separate partition for storing my backups as I create them.
I've tried copying (xcopy /s/e/f) the contents of a successfuly created flash drive to my external drive, but it still doesn't boot.
Any thoughts, ideas, or tricks?
