EAF Mitigation

Post by P19 »

On 64-bit Windows 7 Pro with EMET 5.2 (Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) installed, trying to run "imagew.exe" fails with IFW 2.97d, I get an EAF mitigation error and the application is closed by EMET. The error does not occur with "image64.exe".
Also, after creating a USB recovery disk, apparently successfully, I cannot boot from it; the prompt appears and flashes continually, but nothing happens beyond that.

Use the 64bit version as you did.

For the recovery media, I presume you used Windows not DOS or Linux. Try a
different mode if available (different partition), that boot support comes
from the BIOS and they can be different (based on device type, partitioning,
size, etc..). You may want to use IFL boot disk instead of Windows and
that BIOS USB booting support don't get along.

After I burned IFL onto a USB, it still will not boot. My machine now just acts like it is not bootable media, and takes me to the built-in harddrive booting Windows. The same is true fo CD. This version of IFL is not compatible with my machine because previous IFL version worked. Something is missing here.

Did you use makedisk.exe to create the media?
If not, try that.

I guess you know to change the boot device in the BIOS?
UEFI may interfere with doing that.

This is not a UEFI machine; it has a regular BIOS. Unless I want to boot the hard drive with Windows, while booting, I use an F-key to access the menu for selecting boot order. I select USB device, and the flash drive inserted in a slot should boot if possible. This same procedure allowed me to boot older versions of IFW, and it allows me now to boot other USB devices with different OSs. It is this version that is problematic for me, not my procedure, I believe.

Yes, I used makedisk for creating the media, same as always. :(

as mentioned, try a different mode on the flash drive. You can create it
in non-partitioned mode or partitioned mode. It may be your BIOS doesn't
like one or the other. Use the F key to select the boot device, select
that, press enter.

When you say to try a different mode on the USB device, are you meaning that I should create a new one or that I should do something differently while booting this one? Did the "mode" change recently from what it was? I never had to decide upon a mode with makedisk previously. Thanks.

yes, makedisk is where those options are.

your bios may have some as well, like treating it as a zip drive instead of
a floppy or a hard drive, etc.. but if it worked before and you haven't
changed the bios settings, try a different mode when using makedisk (only
shows the mode when you select the usb drive target).

This worked it out. Thanks for the help. Take care.
