IFL Boot issue

Post by fhearns »

Good Day,

I have been using IFL for years and love the product. That being said I ran into an issue with a new Dell Notebook (Latitude E5550). IFL Start to boot goes through all the normal things and then hang (halts) with an "X" on the screen and is unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. I just download the latest version and tried it with the same results.

Any thought of what could be causing this?

Have you tried any of the alternate video modes available on the initial boot screen, such as 1024x768 graphics, 800x600 graphics, 640x480 graphics, or "best available frame buffer mode" ? Assuming this is a UEFI system, those should all be available to try. The one most likely to work would be the frame buffer mode at the bottom of the list, but the others would be worth a try also.

If none of the video modes works, then once it hangs and you have the "X" on the screen, are you able to use any of the key combinations listed below to get to a Linux command prompt?
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
Ctrl+Alt+F1
Ctrl+Alt+F2

If so, please run the command 'createreport' from the command prompt to create an IFL report, and then follow the prompts to save the report (report.txt) to a drive or partition (such as a UFD). Then attach the file report.txt to an email to TeraByte Support ( support@terabyteunlimited.com ).

Note: If you need to run IFL in the mean time, you should be able to use the IFL (CUI) version on that system (character based), rather than the GUI version. It's downloadable from the same location as the GUI version.

I'm having the same problem with 2.94 on a Lenovo 2992-A5U (i7-3770) computer. Once the screen clears, the computer locks up. I don't recall seeing an "x", and the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. I haven't tried the alternate video modes yet. IFD 2.94 CUI is backing up at the moment. It's taking almost three hours to back up a 400GB partition on a SATA-to-SATA connection. IFL seems much quicker, although that may not be the case.

Are you using cui or gui on IFL?
Try the other one.

I need to remove my wireless mouse/usb plug in IFL gui in order for a
wired mouse to work.

When you say the screen "clears", do you mean the GUI desktop shows up, but the kb and mouse don't respond, or do you just have a blank screen?

In addition to trying the alternate video modes: Once it hangs, are you able to use any of the key combinations listed below to get to a Linux command prompt?
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

In the mean time, you should be able to use the IFL (CUI) version on that system, and that is available for download for registered users on the Product Download page here: https://terabyteunlimited.com/product-download.php

After a few textual things go by, such as the option to select a video mode, the screen clears, the disk spins up, the screen goes black, and there is no way to use the mouse or keyboard.

If you're booting from an optical disc (sounds like it), it might be worth creating the IFL boot media on a new/different disc, or try booting IFL from a UFD instead. Makedisk supports creating the boot media on both CD/DVD and UFDs.
