multiple logons during remote backups

Post by P19 »

When I do backups of a machine on the LAN from within the CD environment running Image for Linux to another machine running 64-bit Win 7 Pro, I normally use the option to connect to the Windows' SMB share because this seems to be the fastest mode to implement. As I watch Windows event log while the backup occurs, I can see the remote connection repeatedly connect and disconnect several times during the procedure even though I am doing nothing on the Linux box except allowing it to continue its procedure. This sort of connectivity occurs every time I do this procedure. Why does it need to reconnect repeatedly when only one machine and one disk is getting backed up?

You'd probably need to check with the Linux maintainers of SMB/CIFS and/or
the kernel.

Can you share your experience in this procedure, such as whether the repeated logons occur on the Windows machine when you, or typically with others who use this product, make their backups under the same circumstances? I was not expecting to be the only one doing so. :)

What I see here is a sequence of logon/logoff events when 'smbclient' is being used from the IFL boot disk to retrieve the list of shares, and then another sequence of logon/logoff events when IFL is mountng the share - and then nothing else until the share is unmounted. I don't see anything happening during actual image operations. You can distinquish these by the time stamps in Event Viewer if you pause in between the steps.

I can't explain all the individual logons/logoffs, but for example, 'smbclient' is being called 3 separate times to retrieve different info, so multiple events are not too surprising.
