VSS or Phylock - which is better?

Hello,
While configuring sending an email notification I noticed the option (is unchecked) to 'Use VSS when available', and I was wondering if this was a good idea or not.
These are all VMs running on ESXi, Windows Server 2008 R2 or plain 2008, 2 are AD servers, the others just Member servers, and NO Exchange Server.
So, what is recommended?
