I followed the Knowledgebase article on converting an Image to a VMDK to virtualize it. I successfully created a VMDK from my TBI file.
Now I would like to run the VM. I'm trying to open it with VMWare Player.

From "File Open" the file type choices are VMX, vmc, s2vi, tib, and ovf/ova. VMDK is not offered as an option.

I also tried to create a new VM in the folder where my VMDK is, but it warns that a VM is already present, and bad things would happen if I created another one there.

So in the first case it doesn't see my file, in the second case it does.

Looking at a different folder where I had previously created a VM from a local partition, I see there is a VMDK, a VMX, a VMXF and a VMSD file of the same name as the virtual machine.

How do I create the other required filed needed to run the VM?

In VMware Player, Create a New VM like this

1 Create new (select a name that is different than the VMDK file you are trying to play)

2 Select how OS is installed, picking "install later".

3 Select Guest OS as XP (same as previously created VMDK -- xp in my case)

4 Select name and location (as appropriate for the host system)

5 Select disk size and store as single file

6 Customize hardware (none)

Once the VM has been created, click on "Edit Virtual Machine Settings". You cannot just edit the disk file name even though it appears to be an edit box under Hard Disk. Instead, click on Hard Disk in the list of devices. At the bottom left, click on Remove to remove the one that was created, then Add another one back in (then selecting the VMDK file you have created).


For others that are trying the same process, it might be helpful to add this information to the Knowledgebase:
