So thought I would try installing Ubuntu again, but ran into the same problem so I aborted and will leave it for now.

The install I tried was :

Created a 105 GB partition on the drive with Partition Work, for Ubuntu 24 and left the remaining 145.20 GB as free space.
Then added the Ubuntu 24 item to BIBM, clicked on boot and it told me to install the UFD if I am installing a new OS and rebooted.

Booted the Ubuntu install UFD

Chose the Manual installation.

Next screen showed me SDA- SDA1 105GB- Free Space 145.20GB
Clicked on Change to choose the SDA1 partition. Chose Ext4 for the file system, then chose / as the mount point and to format.
Then I chose SDA as the install location ( there are only 2 options, the SDA HD1 or HD0 )
Next screen showed:
SDA1 Ext4 Mount point / 105GB size and a checkmark on SDA1, BUT it also shows SDA2 on the same screen with Fat32 beside the file system, next to it- /boot/EFI 113GB and a checkmark next to Format. Where the heck is the second item coming from ?

At this point I exited as something is definitely wrong .

So I give up until I discover a resolution. Kind of weird as I don't have this issue installing Mint.
I may try installing Ubuntu Studio ( I do have a recording Studio ) and see what happens with it, but I suspect the same issue will happen.

Those choices will cause problems. I'd like to see a photo of the partitions on the Ubuntu screen.

Do you see /dev/sdb1? What is the size?

UPDATE :

I had this thought of installing the old Ubuntu 22.04, which I already have on my main HD but could never do the in-place upgrade due to various errors, which led me to trying to install Ubuntu 24 on a different HD.

So I made the UFD with Ubuntu 22.04, went to install it on SDA1 like I was trying to do with Ubuntu 24.

The install went okay, the familiar screen was there with the " something Else " option, installed and ran it.
Then it asked if I wanted to do the in-place upgrade to Ubuntu 24 , said yes and lo and behold, I finally got Ubuntu 24 installed.

So obviously there is a problem with the Ubuntu 24 install.

I did have one error during the install of Ubuntu22.04 and that was that it couldn't find a EFI partition so chose to ignore after warnings that it might not boot and continued with the installation. Would like to know what that means.

Anyway, thought you'd like to know that I succeeded, albeit a weird workaround !

We have different setups. The Ubuntu 24 UFD wouldn't boot on my MBR computers so I had to use Mint. In my Mint setup there was no /dev/sda1 and I installed to /dev/sdb1. A correct choice for my computer. I don't think you had /dev/sdb1. It seems your sda and sdb were reversed.

It was weird.

I did install Ubuntu 24 on a UEFI computer and there were no issues.

Just a small update:
I had been trying to install Ubuntu Studio for a while and could never do it because of the same problems I had with Ubuntu 24.
So today I found an old install, version 18 of Ubuntu Studio and it had a similar install to Mint so I got it installed okay,next to the other partition with Ubuntu 24 on HD1
Once it was installed it wanted to upgrade to version 20, so I did and after that was installed it wanted to upgrade to version 22.04, which also went okay so next I will upgrade it to version 24.04 and I will be up to date.
Sure it is a little convoluted doing it this way but it works, just takes a little longer.
