Ok, they're the same build but it's not quite the same operation.
I don't understand why one is automated and the other is manual, please elaborate.

The "automated" version simply creates a winre.wim file in the tbwinre\WinRE_Backup folder.

If all you need is a "vanilla" .wim file, you're done.

The build process uses the first one it finds.

The "manual" version lets you customize it as needed, as well as offering 4 other build types.

The automated build (in this case) is intended to be run by IFW and checks/creates/updates the build as needed so it can be used for the IFW reboot operation (if the build is current, it will use it instead of rebuilding). It doesn't require any user interaction. For IFW WinRE builds, the installed WinRE is updated. For IFW BootWIM builds, the IFW BootWIM WIM is updated (in the tbwinre\IFW_BootWIM folder).

The manual build creates the same build, but you go through the steps in the GUI to do it.

Normal builds can also be automated by running them from the command line.

The WIM files in the WinRE_Backup folder are the source WIM files. When starting a build and the backup WIM doesn't exist or a newer version is found, it is copied into this folder. For example, with a clean set of build files, the existing WinRE WIM will be copied into the folder when checking build requirements. By default, this file will then be used as the source for TBWinRE builds.

I started with a clean copy of TBWinRE, and as mentioned, that's all it did for me when I ran the automated version...it created a copy of the winre.wim from my Recovery partition in WinRE_Backup.

I know that it grabs the first one it finds when I run the TBWinRE CMD version - Option 2.

Since I have a Recovery partition (some folks don't) and don't do any customizing, I let it get the .wim file from there.
