Don't despair. In addition to Win8 I'm also running Ubuntu and WinXP. The "Other OS" setting allows this.

Allows you to select your installed operating system.

booting on Windows® UEFI mode or other Microsoft® Secure Boot compliant OS.

Can you do a factory restore if you want it back?

Maybe you can create an image before attempting a resize?

You may want to use BIBM or an Image program rather than
BING since it is probably a 64-bit system.

So this other setting must turn it off as your other OSs would not be bootable as they do not support secure boot, i.e. they will not boot if it is active - that is my understanding (muddled as it may be .

TBH, when I next upgrade, secure boot is being turned off/bypassed and my disks will be MBR - until BIBM can be installed on a GPT drive. I'd be lost without it...

If it is really accurate that it cannot be changed, I would
be surprised if the EU does not come down on MS like they
did re Internet Explorer.

Brian et al,

The Toshiba recovery went well, it wiped everything and appeared to restore everything to the way it as before I started messing around, one large partition with Win8, a recovery partition and one other partition for something else.

Since I was comfortable that the recovery did what it did, I've gone ahead an set the BIOS to "CMS" (non-UEFI) and secure boot to disabled, and I could then boot to BING, but only from a CD (my USB sticks don't work with the laptop ...). I then used BING to delete the weird partition and created a new partition and installed Win7 Ultimate on there. It was a pain getting all the drivers installed, but thankfully Toshiba has drivers for Win7 on their website, so things seem to be ok now.

My P9X79 mobo just arrived today. Now, I have to go get a new processor, and am awaiting the cooler and then I'll be putting that together. I'm assuming that I'll disable UEFI and secure boot on that one also, as I don't want to bother with the things that I *CAN'T* do if I set the BIOS to UEFI.

BING doesn't support GPT, BIBM does - you'd want to boot BIBM in legacy
mode.

The BIOS came with UEFI and Secure Boot enabled, with the Win8
pre-installed. I was originally thinking that I could do things like I use
to with BING, i.e., repartition, etc., but I guess not now. I tried setting
the BIOS to "CSM" which diables UEFI, and was actually able to boot to a

actually has only a 500GB drive).

So, I think that I may need to think about moving to BIBM for this laptop,

1) Assuming that both the laptop and the new P9X79 mobo allow disabling
secure boot and UEFI, then, would both the laptop and new PC work the same
way as before, and I could just use BING with both of them, just like
before? Or, do I have to move to BIBM to work with the laptop and the
P9X79?

2) From what I can tell, most, maybe all of the BIOSes that support UEFI
allow you to disable secure boot and UEFI, so I was wondering, is there
something that would force me to use those in UEFI/secure boot mode, rather
than non-UEFI mode?

3) Assuming that I *did* want to keep the laptop/PC BIOSes in UEFI mode, if
I used BIBM instead of BING, could I do everything that I use to do with
BING but with BIBM? I think that one thing that going to UEFI would give me
is support for 3TB drives, but I don't have (or need) any 3TB drives (my
largest drives are 2TB, which work fine with BING).

Brian,

Based on an experience I just had, I'd guess that the answer to your question is that you might be able to restore it, but it probably won't run.

After I did the restore the 1st time (with BIOS set to UEFI and secure boot enabled), and felt comfortable that the restore actually worked, I tried a test (was curious about the same thing you were asking about), and set the BIOS to non-UEFI ("CMS") and secure boot disabled, and tried the restore. The recovery app started, but then said that UEFI was disabled, and wouldn't continue.

I know that's not 100% proof that restoring a Windows version that was installed with UEFI enabled to an MBR drive, but I think I also some some info that when you install Windows with UEFI enabled, that Windows installation would only work with UEFI enabled.

As mentioned earlier, the recovery went ok. The weird thing was that prior to the trashing the Win 8, when I tried to use Windows to shrink the partition it'd only let me shrink to about 250GB. I think that this is because it won't let you shrink the partition to the highest place on the disk where there's an "unmovable" file.

But, after the recovery, again using WIndows, I could shrink it down to about 20GB. I think that this is because when I did the recovery, it put the highest unmovable file lower.
