OK, I've run multiple backups using VSS with the "Lock Unsupported Volumes" and "Ignore Unsupported Volumes" options, and the problem does not occur. So apparently there is a compatibility issue with PHYLock on Windows 8.1. In any case, using VSS solves the problem, so that's what I'll use from now on.
