Hard drive performance problem while disk imaging

I'm working with the following hardware:

ASUS P5KPL-CM motherboard
Western Digital WD10EARS-00MVWB0 hard drive
Hitachi HUA721010KLA330 hard drive

I'm using BootIt Bare Metal 1.29a (not the very latest version I realize, but not exactly old either).

The Hitachi hard drive appears to be in perfect condition, according to HDD Regenerator and hard drive benchmarking software.

The WD is also reported to be error free by HDD Regenerator at the moment, but that program has found and corrected errors recently, which is why I'm replacing it. However, it does perform as expected during imaging operations to and from itself.

The Hitachi hard drive has two partitions, one of which has a TBI file on it. If I restore the TBI image file to the other partition, but without the WD drive connected to the motherboard, the Hitachi performs as expected.

However, if I connect the WD to the motherboard and repeat the exact same operation on the Hitachi, performance drops dramatically, even though the WD is not involved in the operation.

The WD is a newer model than the Hitachi. I'm wondering if connecting the WD prevents the motherboard from operating in some legacy mode during the disk imaging operation on the Hitachi, and instead, tries to run the Hitachi in a mode that it doesn't support. Or perhaps there is some damage to the WD that is manifesting itself in this weird way. I've had a look through the BIOS settings and fiddled with a few settings that looked like they could be vaguely related, but nothing made any difference.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

Edit: Both hard drives perform fine in Windows XP when they are simultaneously connected. Also, the exact same inconsistency in performance of the Hitachi, depending on whether the WD is connected, appears in Symantec Ghost 2003 as well as BITM 1.29a.

You could try using "BIOS (direct)" which will attempt to bypass the BIOS
for IO.

You could use "diskinfo" utility (free downloads) from a DOS type
environment to see if any differences when drive attached or not.
