I'll probably switch it to FAT32 then.
Just to confirm that editing extlinux.conf did the trick. I actually tried changing timeout to 0 as the documentation for syslinux indicates 0 just disables it, but it ended up displaying a prompt, whereas a timeout of 1 worked as expected.
