2T GPT BBM not install

Post by hime3 »

Been using Bing and BBM for partition work and dual booting for many years.
New Lenovo K450e with 2T HD.
Win8.1 on 1.88T GPT Reserved partition.
Intend to install and dual boot to Win7Pro.
Re-read BBM user guide and KB.
Manually made 4MB BootIt EMBRM partition.
BBM would not install. GPT not change to EMBR.
Read KB Converting a GPT Data or Windows Disk to MBR-EMBR.
Rather not attempt the conversion.
1-- how have I erred?
2-- Have spare HD. Is 2nd HD simplest, easiest, safest BBM installation?
Thanks for input

hime3,

From the BIBM manual...

"GPT (GUID Partition Table) drive support for partitioning (not booting)."

If you want to use BIBM for multi-booting....

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=580

You will be surprised as that long tutorial is very easy to follow and perform.

Brian
Thank you for the references. Can you opine about the following alternative approach?
Primary aim is to install and boot to Win7Pro.
After reading the Converting a GPT... instructions, would seem easier to install Win7Pro and BIBM on HD1.?
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=339
I vaguely recall installing BING on HD1 years ago and dual booting.
Attempt several days ago to install BIBM on HD1 failed.
Today, made a HD0 FAT16 partition, but did not install BIBM ... it may not install there and dual boot Win7Pro on HD1?

hime3,

I suspect you want to install BIBM on HD1 and keep your HD0 as GPT. Can't be done I'm afraid. See page 23 in the manual...

"Read the displayed message indicating that you must ensure that an Extended Master Boot Record (EMBR) exists on hard disk 0 (HD0) and on the drive chosen for installation, and then click OK."

To install BIBM, HD0 needs an EMBR not a GPT.

Brian,
Been working with PC software and hardware since 1992.
GPT makes much of my self taught kb defunct.
Addressing GPT is a challenge I had not anticipated with this new PC purchase.
Made 8MB FAT16 partition. BIBM would not convert the 8MB to EMBR.
Read, reread and tested to finally grasp the issue: can not create an EMBR partition within the 2T GPT Reserved partition.
The only way to install BIBM on its own partition is to convert the entire GPT to EMBR per instruction link you provided.
Will proceed slowly & revamp my kb.
Thank you again.

hime3,

I've done this numerous times on my test computer and it is easier that it appears.

Brian, your patience is appreciated.
Might a workaround be to install BIBM and Win7Pro to the second HD, change it to HD0 and changing the OEM Win8.1 to HD1, thereby being able to dual boot to each OS, after making appropriate BIBM setting?
If this is a viable approach, the OEM Win8.1 system would remain unaltered.

hime3,

Make sure you have good backup images before you try that scenario.

Brian, started a new post
"GPT to EMBR conversion OS not boot"
Before restoring full HD image to try conversion again, any ideas why OS will not boot?
What to do?
