BING imaging - Can't read hard drive (SSD)

Post by GordonM »

I am trying to image (using BING 1.87) the small SSD in my ancient EeePC 701 netbook. The imaging process seems to be inconsistent. The first few times that I tried to do this (to a USB drive), when I tried to paste to the USB drive, I very soon got an error saying that the hard drive (SSD) couldn't be read. I am now trying for a fourth time and the imaging process is showing that it is half complete. Maybe it will be successful this time. Imaging is very slow on this 4GB SSD and will probably take about 20 minutes, if successful, if the current progress is maintained.

Does any one now why I might be getting these SSD read errors? Does this tend to be an issue when imaging SSDs? This is probably a first generation SSD and might not even have wear-levelling. Nevertheless, I haven't had any indication of SSD failure when running Windows XP, either while using Windows or when running Check Disk.

Imaging has just completed this time and I am waiting to see if the image validates .... again, very slow. The validation did not complete. The message "An error occurred reading from the hard drive". etc. appeared, so I am no further forward. I am wondering whether something dynamic is happening in the SSD, which is causing it to change during the process.

Thank you
GordonM

P.S. Since writing the above, I have also tried to image the SDHC card that is inserted into the EeePC. The same error has occurred.

Gordon,

I suggest trying BIBM. BING is an old app.

I suppose I could do that though, as I bought BING, I thought I would try to use it first. I haven't seen this failure behaviour before.

You will probably get a discount on BIBM.I know I did.

Thanks Mary, I'll bear that in mind. From the description of BIBM, it appears that it uses Image for DOS for imaging and I already have this as part of a IfW purchase, though I have never used it.

I am presuming that "Bare Metal" implies that BIBM doesn't use Windows in any way. I have an issue in that the SSD that I am trying to image, can't be removed from the EeePC, so I can't use IfW to image and restore it in another machine.

You could use Image for Linux boot disk as well since you have IFW.

If you have IFW, you already have access to IFD & IFL.
You don't say what version you have, if 1 or 2.
Two uses a different imaging file type than BING does.

You can download and create bootable media to image.
You will need your invoice number and the email address
you used to purchase IFW to get access to the downloads.

Support can assist you if that info is lost.

Yes, BIBM runs outside of Windows similar to what BING does.

I think you can download and try BIBM out w/o installing.

I need to image two things from my EeePC; the SSD and a SDHC card. The SDHC card is currently used to hold most of the Windows Program Files and certain other things like "My Documents", temp files etc, to save space on the small SSD. Imaging the SSD is essential but the SDHC is probably optional, given that I can remove it and keep it on-hand if I want to restore the machine back to its original state.

I have read through the IfL manual and I hope that I can just use the default settings but I am not sure about this. In particular, I am wondering about partition alignment, given that I will be imaging a SSD, i.e.

Align Partitions on 1MiB Boundaries – This option provides a convenient
way to enable 1MiB partition alignment for all drives (drives with 512 byte
sectors will be aligned on 2048 sectors; drives with 4096 byte sectors will be
aligned on 256 sectors). This is popular with users of SSD type drives. It is
the equivalent to enabling the individual overrides Align on 1MiB
Boundaries, Align MBR Ending HS, Align MBR HS when Truncated, and
disabling Align on End.

I would enable the "Align Partitions on 1MiB Boundaries" global option. When backing up, you could set the compression mode to "Enhanced Speed - A" (faster back up speed) and enable the "Validate" option.
