P2V & choosing partition options

Post by userX »

When doing the P2V script, is it necessary to copy the whole disk when there are multiple partitions? Normally, whenever =>Win7 installs, it makes at least two, one for booting and the other for system files. Additionally, on a machine with three partitions, the third one being for data, not programs or system files, I would like to make a copy of it using the P2V script but excluding this third partition if possible.

When I go straight into the P2V script, I don't see anywhere to pick and choose which partions to use. Alternatively, when I first go into the IFW or IFL program to make a backup to a vhd, I can pick which partitions to backup and I can back them up to a vhd created right then. Or, I can select partitions to back up to a TBI file and then later restore or copy this file to a vhd, thereby having only certain partitions. My concern is whether it would be allowed to exclude some partitions when the intention is to afterward use the vhd for booting in a VM? Does having changed the physical size of the disk prevent Windows from booting in the VM even though the correct drivers may have been added?

Yes, you can choose either the whole tbi file, either only one partition. Not 2 out of 3 (for instance).

The new copyP2V script can now detect if a System Reserved or a EFI Partition is included in the tbi image file, and can restore it also (if choosing only one partition to restore from a multi-image).
