Mary,

I would like to chime in.
I got lost on which drive you are defragging, and why.

You talk about shutdown issues, and yet about D drive.

Are you storing your images on D drive (as I do)
I know from past experience to never defrag my image drive (D), not if I
want it done 'today' I typically keep four C drive images and two E
drive images (music files) on D drive, but leave it strictly alone.

Did you attempt to defrag your page file?

Alan,
Restored a 9/14 image. Shutdown there is about 15-17 seconds.
Prior to restore it was taking close to 3 minutes to shut down.
I don't know why I got such a quick reboot earlier. Was the last time.

Had to use Mozbackup to bring Thunderbird up to date from
TB 17 to TB 24.

Now to reboot with TB 24 updated and see if I still
get 15-17 second reboots.

Quit looking for a page file defragger for Win 7 of any flavor.

I do have a DVD of win 7 X86 with a clean install and activated, done on
2/12/12, with few programs on it. If worse comes to worse, I will put
that one on the computer.

Check that you are not clearing the pagefile when shutting down.

Mary,

I decided a long time ago that, as much as I depend on my images to get
me back in shape after even minor events, that I could no longer just
make an image when the mood struck me.

So, I make a full disc image every night of my three-partition C drive,
and keep the last four by date, (that's a purely arbitrary number)

I just don't understand how imaging the D drive got into the picture.

Mary, this comment I found may be of interest:

Prevent Fragmented Pagefile

For those who do use a pagefile, there is a fairly simple means of
preventing pagefile fragmentation. First, in "System Properties"
"Advanced" tab, click on the "Settings" button under the "Performance"
header. Click on the "Advanced" tab in "Performance Options". Under the
"Virtual memory" header, click the "Change" button.

In the virtual memory dialog box, highlight each of your listed
drive letters, click the "No paging file" radio button, and click the
"Set" button. After all listed drives have been set for no paging file,
OK your way back out. Windows will advise a reboot before the settings
take effect. OK and reboot.

Next, defrag the drive where you want your paging file. Having no
pagefile will not be a handicap for this procedure. When the defrag is
finished, go back through the above steps, except now highlight the
drive of choice, click the "Custom size" radio button. In the "Initial
size (MB)" and "Maximum size (MB)" fields, use the same value. I suggest
4096 (4GB). OK your way back out, and again Windows will advise a
reboot. OK and reboot.

Having defragged your drive of choice, and making the pagefile 4GB,
it will be written as a single contiguous file on the drive. Having set
the custom initial size and maximum size to be the same, Windows will
never try to resize the pagefile, and it will stay in its contiguous
state henceforth.

This is the procedure I used back when I still used a pagefile, and
it worked very well indeed. The pagefile never fragmented.
