SLOW SHUT DOWN W7 x86

Post by mjnelson99 »

My older laptop is taking at least a full minute to shut down even when
I have shut down IE, TB or other running programs.

Ideas?

Fragmented swap file
Fragmented disk
Did this happen suddenly or was it slowly increasing over time?
What is the OS?

Win 7 x86. I am not sure re how long it has been happening. I don't
think is was as long in July 2013. It does look like it is increasing
over time.

I looked & C is minimally fragmented. Will defrag anyway.

I think that I do have a page file defrag program. Will look.

FYI, Page defrag does not work on Win 7 per Russinovich. Created in 2006.

Here's a freebie for you that does it
http://www.piriform.com/docs/defraggler. Do you have any browsers or
windows set to remove their cache files/pagefile contents respectively
on shutdown?

I do use defraggler. They do not list page file on boot defrag, though.
I will try that anyway

I use C Cleaner periodically for TB cache, etc. cleanup. Probably time
to do that again.

Defaggler got hung up defragging D. I wonder if something like that
could slow shutting down?

I shut it down.

Also downloaded O & O & Auslogic defragmenters

Will do a boot time with defraggler, first.

The file defraggler got hung up on is an image IFW/IFD file created
9/14/2013.
I then picked out that file to defrag. It is happening now.

Probably should have just re-imaged and deleted then.

Deleted that image file.

It does look like that file was the cause of slow shut downs. It only
takes a few seconds to shut down now.

It seems like booting up may be a bit faster, too.

P.S. Defraggler did not succeed in the boot defrag either time I put it
in to run.
