i have a dual-boot setup with two hard drives. The first has Win7 (with separate System Reserved partition) and the second one has Win8 (also with System Reserved partition). I do not assign drive letters to the Win7 volumes in Win8 and vice-versa in order to avoid changes, corruption, etc.
I normally run backups of the Win7 volumes only while booted into Win8 and Win8 backups only while booted into Win7. So just out of curiosity, I did an incremental of the Win8 disks twice in a row without ever booting into Win8. I would expect those backup files to be identical, same size & checksum. They aren't, though. I don't question they'll work -- I've been using this stuff since February 2007 and it has always worked flawlessly, saved me at least 4 times I can recall. I'm just curious as to what's going on here? Notice the different number of sectors backed up on the System Reserved partition. Here is the IfW log.

Some information Windows or VSS updated on the partition/volume. To find
it, you'd do something like restore each of those 350M partition to their
own raw virtual drive of exactly the same size and then use a binary file
compare utility to find the information updated.
