what is the minimum free space required for a backup

hello

i have a ssd (32GB) with Windows 7 (x64) - it is pretty full - about 2 GB free.
when i try to image with IFW the backup fails with a hard drive error.
i am able to image with another Drive Image and I have tested the SSD (no errors)
as a last resort i changed the size of paging file (i now have nearly 4 GB free) - i can now image with IFW

what is the minimum space required on the source disk for a successful image?

Windows might get a bit unhappy with so little free space on
a hard drive. Can you move some data to a different drive
instead and notice if that makes a difference?

It doesn't care about free space - in order to use phylock it needs some
free space - but it will use what it can and if can't, use ram. There is a
problem if you use VSS with the x86 version if IFW on a x64 machine if you
do back to back image operations too fast you may see a read error (fixed in
coming 2.82). but if windows runs out of space itself, it can cause issues.

thanks very much for your replies.

i use the ssd as an HTPC system drive and i store my recordings on a 1TB hdd.
i only have the bare minimum on the ssd and don't plan to add anymore programs but i think that windows update may be taking more than it's fair share.
if i have anymore problems i may try using the 32bit version of windows 7. i only have 4GB of ram. the only thing stopping me is trying to get my tuner card all setup again (it was a pain)

TB could be correct in that Windows does now require some
breathing room. I know in the past I had a crowded disk
(maybe Win2K?) and could not defrag. Do not remember if
imaging was a problem.

An idea I had is there may be backup files pre SP 1 that you
may be able to delete after creating a backup image
somewhere else first.

Try imaging booting from IFD/IFL on CD, DVD or USB device also.

i deleted hiberfil.sys (3 GB) - everything is rosy now - over 6 GB free

I would also check out your temp folders. Win 7 leaves so much crud in
there you will get GBs back if you have not cleaned them before. Also,
if you applied SP1 separately you could have a massive backup lurking
on your system that could be deleted.

Moving to 32 bit windows would not give you that much more space.
