No Permission to Create Recovery Boot Disk

Post by 68a869 »

I installed the trial version and am trying to run Image For DOS/Create Recovery Boot Disk under Windows XP. When I try to run the program, I get a message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I am running as administrator. The shortcut points to C:\Program Files\TeraByte Unlimited\Image for Windows\V2\IFD\makedisk.exe. When I try to run this program from a command prompt, I get a message access is denied. I am able to scan the file using my AVG antivirus.

What happens if you double click makedisk.exe in the C:\Program Files\TeraByte Unlimited\Image for Windows\V2\IFD folder?

I get this message:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Strange. I suggest you download the IFD trial and run makedisk.exe from the extracted download folder.

your av program may be blocking it for some reason, false positive, or other
"feature" of your av program (disable it when you run makedisk, if it works,
complain to the AV vendor as it typically requires customers to report it
before they fix it). You can also try right clicking and run as
administrator.

I disabled AVG and it made no difference. I tried installing the software on a mounted USB drive, and now if I try to run makedisk I do not get a permission error, but I get an hourglass for a few seconds and then nothing.

Also, whenever I try to run Image for Windows I get an immediate blue screen of death.

I installed Image for DOS and Image for Windows on a second computer, and it worked fine. I created a recovery disk on the second computer and it runs fine on the second computer. When I take that recovery disk and try to use it to boot the original computer, I get a message "TBOSLDR 1.02 Please wait". Then nothing else happens and I have to power off the comuter.

I tried a few more things. First I found that Image for Windows could run in safe mode but gives a BSOD in normal mode. Then I used UWIN unix emulator and from a korn shell did a listing of files in the IFD directory, getting the following result:

drwx------ 2 Jeff None 512 Oct 23 12:17 .
drwx------ 4 Jeff None 512 Oct 23 12:17 ..
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 523264 Sep 20 15:36 cdboot.f35
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 19 Oct 6 2007 cdboot.ins
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 952105 Aug 5 13:46 ifd_en_manual.pdf
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 480359 Sep 20 15:36 image.exe
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 13482 May 11 2008 license.txt
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 2159 Apr 8 2011 makedisk.cfg
---------- 1 Jeff None 479064 Sep 16 16:57 makedisk.exe
-rwx------ 1 Jeff None 512 Aug 16 17:45 tbosbs32

I changed the permissions on makedisk.exe with chmod 755, getting this:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 Jeff None 479064 Sep 16 16:57 makedisk.exe

However, every time I run the makedisk program nothing obvious happens and the file permissions are reset to
---------- 1 Jeff None 479064 Sep 16 16:57 makedisk.exe

I also found the same behaviour on one of my other programs (login.exe part of UWIN), so I have to think I may have a virus or some other problem with my computer that is causing the errors.

yes, sounds like something strange is going on. the BSOD comes when you
even try to run it? it may be scanning devices, do you have any third party
virtual devices installed (cdrom to file/encryption containers/etc..) - some
of those may not implement the ioctls properly ?

You could try booting IFL on the system too, it boots a little different, or
use UFD for IFD instead of CD.

I do not know whether this is relevant or not, but did you "unblock" the
file you downloaded before installing it?
