WinXP

Post by npderi »

I have managed to get several OSes installed, although during my inital attempts I had not realized what the correct proceedures where. Despite that, I did install WinXP on the second partition I had created, out of a total of 4, before I screwed up the data not realizing that I needed to try and boot from the newly created partition to make it active for my Win8 install to use.

I ended up accidentally installing WIn8 on the 3 partition, basically overriding WIn7. And for some reason WinXP bootup now said it was missing NTLDR.dll.

So, I thought ok, I'll redo this and make sure I not miss the part where you activate the new partition, or existing one for the OS to install.

My problem now is that Win 7 has installed cleanly on the correct partition, same with Win8 (disabled fast boot), but WinXP install gives me the bluescreen of death once I hit <enter> for the setup to start after it has loaded all it's initial files/drivers... I even tried clearing the boot sector for the partition, but no go.

WinXP ends up giving me the follow code in the BSOD:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000006, 0x8090E5F9, 0xF4FE9A10, 0x000000)

Any ideas?

Check your SATA settings in the BIOS, is it set to IDE or AHCI (may
use 'legacy' or 'enhanced' respectively)?

I don't know were you got it now, but the proper procedure to recover from
W7 or W8 placing the boot code in your XP partition was:

In general, the Win7/Win8 issues are covered here:

I feel rather dumb now. I had racked my brain over this, and did read the mentioned links in the KB. None of it worked, so since I did this on a different drive altogether as a learning phase, I decided to do the proverbial "tear it down, and build it again". So I deleted all the partitions on the drive from Bootit BM startup, except the MBR installed by Bootit BM.

Installed WinXP, and same ugly problem shows up. I then realised that the hours spent trying to install WinXP were all doom to failure anyway, as I had two copies, and one CD (although you can't visually notice easily) was slightly damaged, and I had mixed the two after having done the initial successful install before the previous mistake I made. I threw the bad CD away, and the setup went nicely with the right CD.

I should know better than to try to troubleshoot problems while only having 1.5 hours of sleep. That's my excuse anyway. :P

Thanks guys.

Oh man, have I ever so been there. First, congrats on sorting it out.

I recall I got a virus, the sort of bugger that autoloads with
windows. My (fully updated) AV was having trouble dealing with it...a
couple of hours later, the penny dropped and I used system restore to
get to a pre-infected time and the AV dealt with the files themselves
- 5 mins to fix, HOURS of putzing about.

You may be able to copy the good disc using a burning program.

XP does not seem to be as available as an iso file like Win
7 & 8 are.

It depends where one looks ;-). When I have a valid licence, I am not
too worried about the source of my ISOs.

No worries on the WinXP cd, I have the ISO already saved somewhere. However, what I've done now is make 3 partitions of WinXP, 3 of Win7, 3 of Win8. I am going to figure out a way to hide the first of each of those OSes, use one for work, and one for development/testing/whatever, and if it fails at any point I can just delete partition from BootBM and copy/paste from my clean source. Superfast when I did install WinXP and found out I could just copy/paste the entire partition. I did a bit of a OMGWTFBBQ dance.

Thanks again folks. I am going to post a question in a different thread about Linux and BSD setups, the FAQ is confusing me a bit.

Not sure why you need to figure out how to hide a partition. Maybe you're limiting primaries? I wish TB would actually recommend NOT limiting primaries with the warning not to use any other partitioning tools. It makes life so much simpler and more effective to have each OS thinking it's the only thing in town - so long as it doesn't try to use the "free space" on the disc. I tend to use a common FAT32 partition for data available to all Win and Linux systems.

OK it's in another thread but while I'm writing here all I'd say is BSD isn't quite so friendly, so take care with that. Linux is fine if the installer lets you control what partitions to use and specifically where to put Grub i.e. in the root partition not on the MBR - all the Linuxes I've tried in the last couple of years do play ok here, a few years ago Ubuntu didn't.

It is as easy as Linux but different.
