No DVD ROM in Windows 8

Post by Ed Smith »

I installed the Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM full version from newegg.

After installing, there is no DVD ROM in Computer. It just shows my hard
drive. Put in a disc and nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks,
Ed.

Win 7 only shows DVD/CD drives when disk is in. If you have placed a
functioning disk it it, it appears that your drive is not being recognized.
First test cables and cable connections, best by swapping cables and
changing ports. If that does not work, swap drive out and replace or try it
in another computer. Make sure you have a functioning disk in it for all
tests. Another option is to dual boot XP and try it in that OS.

I remember reading something about that, but don't remember the exact details. I think it was caused by a BIOS problem. You might check for a BIOS update for your board.

This is a user configurable setting, I have mine showing when empty.

One of the most common software reasons for not seeing the DVD is a
problem with registry keys - unusual on a vanilla install but I had
some strange issues with my Win 8 install here too.

Google "dvd drive high filters" for more info.

My DVD drive does show up in Win 7 X64 when there is no disk
in the drive. I doubt if Win 8 is different.

One thing I would try is to disconnect the drive, check how
it is pinned and what the connecting cable looks like,
reboot with it disconnected, Shut down. Reconnect. Reboot.

I presume you were able to access the drive in the first
place in order to install Win 8?

When I boot Win7 all is find and my DVD-ROM shows and works reading disc,
etc.

It's after I did a clean install of Win8, it don't appear anywhere with or
without a disc in it.
Thanks,
Ed.

Thanks for the reply. I can't get a BIOS update as it's an Abit AB9 Pro
board and they don't have a website any more.

Yes was able to access it to install Win8. I dual boot with Bare Metal 1.13
and when in Win7 it shows and works fine.

Thanks for the reply,
Ed.

I had a corruption issue with a vanilla install of Win 8. One of the
symptoms being I could not change the desktop. I had to run sfc
/scannow (which dumps a large folder or two on the drive) to fix it.
May help you.

Thanks but I solved the problem. I searched around in the Microsoft Forums.
I found many had the same problem. Most them solved it by changing the SATA
port that the DVD Drive was on. In my case I changed it from #4 to #6 thus
leaving #4 and #5 empty. I have a hard drive on each of #1, #2 and #3.

Don't know why it made it work in Win8. It still works too in Win7.

In the forums they said something about Win8 looks for the DVD Drive as a
Slave. Changing from Slave to Master makes it work. I would think that
applied to IDE drives and SATA drives. But I changed mine around as I said
above and it now works and shows up in Computer.

Thanks again for your help,
Ed.
