Correct alignment of 2nd partition on SSD

Post by Skyglider »

I have a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. Replaced the 300GB spinner HDD with a 256GB SSD. Then installed Windows 8 Pro. Verified that the partition alignment in the SSD is correct.

Now I want to partition the SSD to have about 75 GB for the system and programs, with the balance for data. How can I use Boot It NG to create the second partition so that partition alignment for the data will be correct?

Thanks,

Once the new partition is created, use Win 8 to format it.

Hi DrTeeth,

That sounds too easy! :D
Thanks much and I'll give it a try.

It isn't. Both the Win 7 and Win 8 format commands automatically align. Sure I heard it from TBU. This http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... 85%29.aspx seems to support that.

Make sure you select the Align 2048 setting in BING.

Brian,

AIUI, the Win 7 and Win 8 format commands automatically align the partitions and changing the setting in BING should not be necessary, unless BING will *undo* any alignment in subsequent partition actions. Somehow, I don't think TBU would let that happen. Please let me now if I have got the wrong end of the stick.

With kind regards

DrT,

As far as I understand, formatting has nothing to do with partition alignment. The partition needs to commence on a 2048 sector boundary.

It may not be the formatting, but the partition creation tools in Win 7 SP1 and Win 8 support the alignment. I may be mistaken about the formatting issue.

That's correct. Partitions created by Vista (onwards) diskpart (Disk Management) are 2048 sector aligned.
